The Eco-friendly Sailor spirit on the Celtic Goodwill Raid
The media is constantly reminding us of Global Warming and our “Carbon footprint”.
They are telling us that sooner or later we are going to have to rethink our way of living and lifestyle.
The subject is recurrent and everyone has his or her opinion!
In the spirit of the Celtic Goodwill Raid, the Raiders hope to encourage everyone to do their bit for our environment.
The Celtic Goodwill Raid logo was designed to show our aspirations and Eco Friendly intentions…
- in dark blue, the Sea
- in light blue, the Air
- in rich green, the Land
…and hence to remind us and others of our tasks in our efforts for our planet.
Radical messages are not always the most effective, but simple and regular reminders can lead to a greater and sustainable impact on the way we live our lives and look after our world.
The problem is our “RUBBISH” and the way we dispose of it.
It is true that modern technologies are responding to the problems, but who amongst we navigators really understands the complications of all the issues?
We can do our bit by reducing the size of the problems.
Practicing our basic water bourn activities actually creates little pollution, although we are regularly questioned about our motors and motorboats.
Without going into the pros and cons of these debates, we have to recognise the progress made through technical advances in modern motor design and management.
- undeniably these advances have had their effects on marine motors and we can be seen to be cleaning up our act.
Having said this, the organisers of the Celtic Goodwill Raid have started some simple initiatives:
- in every port, by flying the flag issued to all participating boats…
- on every leg of the Raid, the Green flag is carried by one of the participating boats as testimony to our green aspirations.
- the Eco Friendly Sailors Charter has evolved from our discussions and serves as a reminder as to why we are flying the flag.
In effect, without wanting to impose on anyone, we hope to nurture the simple message which we feel is laudable and defendable.
But without a doubt it is a subject that will reverberate around the pontoons now and again and will be raised in our friendly cockpit discussions.
